What is a Community Benefit Society?
A community benefit society is the ideal legal structure for community-led initiatives such as ours, as it exists to serve the broader interests of the community. The society has members who hold shares and are accorded democratic rights on the basis of one-member-one-vote. Profits from the business are reinvested back into the community that it is set up to serve.
It is important to highlight that ‘community’ does not simply mean Knoydart locals - but all those who work, live, visit and are invested in the future of Knoydart and The Old Forge.
Community benefit societies have been around for a long time and the model is tried and tested with great success in community pubs and shops across the UK.
